Schools open after 3 months

Schools in Sri Lanka which remained closed for over three months in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, re-opened today (29).

The Education ministry stated that schools will be opened in several stages under guidelines issued by health experts. 

Under the first phase which starts today, only principals, teachers, support staff and management will report to work.

Schools will open in four stages as follows :

1st phase : June 29th - July 3rd (Principals, teachers & support staff)
2nd phase : July 6th - July 17th (Grades 5, 11 & 13 )
3rd phase : July 20th (Grades 10 & 12)
4th phase : July  27 (Grades 3, 4, 6, 7 ,8 & 9) 
In addition, a decision with regard to Grades 1 & 2 is yet to be taken.
The Secretary to the Ministry of Education, NHM Chithrananda said for a period of one week, school premises and other facilities will be disinfected and monitored before permitting students to attend classes. This disinfection process will be carried-out in schools until July 03.

Meanwhile, only 20 students will be permitted in one class room following the re-opening of schools.

Meanwhile, Police have been directed to monitor the transportation of students to schools and minimise congestion in vehicles.
