Presidential pardon for 600 inmates over COVID-19 Featured

Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya says that about 600 inmates who have been imprisoned by the courts for minor offenses have been pardoned by the President.

It is reported that the letter regarding the Presidential pardon was received by the prison headquarters yesterday (27 Nov).

He said that none of the inmates serving prison terms for serious offenses would be pardoned.

Consideration for inmates to be sent to gallows

The Department of Prisons has proposed to grant a pardon to those who have been given the capital punishment and have been imprisoned for 20 years to life imprisonment and to pardon prisoners who have been sentenced to life imprisonment and have been impriosned to 25 years to the status of ordinary prisoners.

The Department of Prisons states that this amnesty will not be extended to those convicted of drug offenses and underworld crimes.

Protest  demanding cases to be expedited 

A group of inmates of two prisons staged a protest yesterday (27 Nov) demanding that their cases be expedited.

Five inmates of the Welikada Prison and seven inmates of the Negombo Prison have engaged in the protest.
