President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has instructed the Secretary to the Ministry of Highways to construct a new bridge to access the Pigeon Island adjacent to the Matara Beach Park.

The Presidential Media Unit announced that Ven. Omare Kassapa Thero had informed the President that the bridge joining the Island had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time and that it had become inaccessible to the island due to its collapse yesterday (04) morning.

The island is home to the Rohana Chapter of the Siam Maha Nikaya and is a popular destination for local and foreign tourists.

Officials of the State Development and Design Corporation are scheduled to visit the site this morning (05) to inspect the construction work. The Secretary to the Ministry of Highways stated that the construction of the bridge is expected to be completed within six months.
